Mr Farage, a prominent member of the leave campaign, tweeted: “If you want your borders back, if you want your democracy back, if you want your country back then vote to Leave! #IndependenceDay.”

Sir Nicholas replied: “Oh b******s.”

One Twitter user wrote: “You speak for the nation Sir Nicholas.”

Another said: “My idol.”

Polls closed at 10pm with the first results from 382 centres across the UK expected shortly after midnight.

But the first Sussex results are expected after 2am.

Regional results are being collated at 12 centres, including one at Southampton, with the overall result due to be declared at Manchester Town Hall after 7am.
