REFERENDUM: '˜We knew result was going to be tight' - Hastings and Rye MP

Hastings and Rye's MP said they '˜knew it was going to be tight' as the first EU referendum results have been announced.

Early declarations in the North East of England have been greeted with joy by leave campaigners, as although remain barely won in Newcastle it was expected to have a much larger majority, while in Sunderland leave finished with 61 per cent of the vote.

Appearing on the BBC, Hastings and Rye MP Amber Rudd said: “I’m going to be uneasy until we have got the final result. It’s all to play for.”

Asked about the Newcastle result in particular, she explained that there were more than 380 local results coming in, and while she was ‘uneasy’, she ‘had been uneasy from the moment the polls closed’.

She added: “I do not judge anything on that particular result.”

She continued: “It was never going to be a walkover. We knew it was going to be tight’.

The first Sussex declarations are expected after 2.30am up to 6.30am.

Results will be collated at 12 regional centres with an overall announcement at Manchester Town Hall expected after 7am.
