Praise for unit at Bexhill High

A SPECIALISED teaching unit at Bexhill High has been praised for its efforts.

The Autism Support Pod at Bexhill High has been officially acknowledged as providing a top quality service for students.

Robert Pritchett, the National Autistic Society Director, visited the Academy in Gunters Lane on Friday to present the unit with a special plaque and certificate.

The unit - affectionately known as The ASPie - caters for young people aged 11 to 16 and has a set of rooms and specialist staff.

Executive Principal Mike Conn said: “We are very proud at Bexhill High of the wonderful Autism Support Pod facility run by Philip Edkins.

“Some of the achievements here are fantastic and we are delighted to have received this recognition from the National Autistic Society.

“We were delighted to welcome Mr Pritchett into the school and he was able to see for himself exactly how the unit is run.’

Philip said: “It was truly a great honour to welcome the National Autistic Society back into school, and to host its Director.

“I know from the feedback that he was very impressed by what he saw - which is exactly what his inspector said when he visited us earlier.”

In the recent assessment of the unit, 86.25 per cent of parents said they are happy or very happy with provision of the unit.

And 86 per cent of lessons observed met, or met and exceeded, the standards expected for ASC students.
