£50 million will give our area a 'heart transplant'

A £50m regeneration package has been announced for Bexhill and Rother.

The four-pronged attack on the area s transport and economic problems comes just days after the launch of a business initiative to reverse Bexhill s ailing town centre trade.

The cash injection, in direct response to the Government s bypass refusal, has been welcomed enthusiastically by town chiefs.

It would open the door to 50 years of better opportunity and prosperity and was a heart-transplant for Bexhill itself, said Malcolm Mitcheson, president of the Chamber of Commerce. It was also a crucial step in reversing 50 years of decline.

The package of ideas to build a knowledge-based economy for short, medium and long term investment in the Rother and Hastings area was agreed at East Sussex County Council s Cabinet meeting.

It had been put together by a partnership spearheaded by Rother District Council, County Hall, and SEEDA (South East England Development Agency).

It now goes to government ministers in the next few weeks for approval.

On the table is a new relief road from central Bexhill to link with Queensway, Hastings; a university; parkway rail station with high speed trains to London; and broadband linkage for faster internet communications.
