Pub enjoys towering success

The friendly St Leonards street corner local has become a magnet for beer lovers.

It offers a wide selection of well-kept beers from small craft breweries, many of which are local to the area.

As well as being named CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale) South-east Sussex Pub of the Year, it has also been named Community Pub of the Year and Cider Pub of the Year 2015.

Landlady Louisa Gover believes its a combination of good beer , friendly knowledgeable staff and a real old fashioned pub atmosphere that has led to their success.

She said: “Having been in the Good Beer Guide for the last two years we pride ourselves in sourcing the best quality local beers as well as brews from further afield to give our customers a wide variety of choice, whether it be a hoppy real ale from Sussex, a full bodied real cider, a fine wine or a crisp refreshing lager.

“Everyone is welcome at the Tower, from those who just fancy a quiet drink, or to watch live Sky and BT Sports or play a game of school.

“The pub is a well established community led boozer with customers who enjoy a get together sitting outside of the Tower.”

The pub also organises a popular yearly trek to the Dark Star Brewery in West Sussex.

Louisa said: “One pub-goer liked us so much he voted us in his top 10 of all favourite pubs to visit as portrayed in the Sun National newspaper recently.”

One local CAMRA member commented: The attraction with the Tower is an ever-changing range of beers which are very competitively priced.

“There is always a good chance of being able to sample some rare and unusual beers in the Tower.”

The pub is also popular with Arsenal fans and has a whole wall of memorabilia paying homage to the North London giants.

The Tower is named after a former toll gate and tower on London Road and opened in 1886.

In 1943 the pub was bombed by the Luftwaffe and a thousand pound bomb landed in the cellar, but miraculously failed to explode. It was defused and lifted out through the cellar flaps. In 1991 the Tower was threatened again. This time with demolition, to make way for the proposed Hastings bypass.
