A new name for the major development in North East Bexhill has been suggested by council officers.

Wyrtlesham is the ‘most appropriate’ name and has the ‘greatest historical significance’, according to the county archaeologist.

Rother District Council cabinet members will discuss the new name for the area where more than 1,000 homes will be built at a meeting on Tuesday (September 7).

The archaeologist said Wyrtlesham had been used as a name for what is now Worsham Farm in the Offa charter of 772.

It had also been called Wretlisham in 1262 and 1327, Wertlesham in 1279, 1296 and 1332, plus Wersham and Worseham 1595 and 1795.

Also on the agenda at the meeting is advice on village neighbourhood plans to meet housing requirements, further recipients of community grants and revaluating the council’s funding for the Bexhill Christmas lights.

Advice on neighbourhood plans to meet housing requirements, further recipients of community grants, revaluating the council’s funding for the town Christmas lights and what to name the area where more than 1,000 homes are to be built are all to be discussed.

The cabinet is set to consider grant applications for 10 different organisations, with a £130,000 kitty to hand out.

Officers have recommended Wyrtlesham as the new name for North East Bexhill as the county archaeologist believes it is the ‘most appropriate’ and has the ‘greatest historical significance’.

Rother is required to build 5,700 net additional homes by 2028 so these may have to be incorporated into village’s neighborhood plans.
