High street retailers Marks & Spencers opened its new store at Ravenside retail park yesterday (November 28) delighting shoppers and boosting the local economy with 120 jobs.
The new store, which was due to open in the spring 2014, attracted hundreds of local shoppers when it opened ahead of schedule and well in time for Christmas.
As the crowds waited in line for the official opening they were treated to hot coffee provided by M&S staff.
People then cheered as store manager Robert Harford cut the ribbon and welcomed everyone to the new M&S.
He said he was thrilled that the new M&S had opened early, adding: “It’s great to finally be able to share our new store in Bexhill with customers.
“We have the very best of M&S fashion and food with fantastic ranges, in-store services and a perfectly situated M&S Café overlooking the sea.”
The opening of the new store has give a massive boost to the local economy securing 120 jobs and Mr Harford said he has a great team: “Staff are very enthusiastic about being involved in the new store and are eager to get to know local customers. “Ultimately, they are looking forward to providing them with a superb service.”
Mr Harford lives in Eastbourne and is very familiar with the local area.
He has worked for M&S for 13 years and previously managed M&S stores at Hastings, Eastbourne and Horsham.
Many people shopping at the store on the opening day were from Bexhill and spoke of their delight that they will have a new shopping experience on their doorstep without having to travel to Hastings or Eastbourne. Bexhillians Des and Joan Richards said they are “true Marks and Spencer fans” and that the new store is “very nice, very impressive”,
Mr Harford added: “The new store will create a fantastic new shopping experience for local customers.
“Being involved in the development of this store has been incredibly exciting and I look forward to welcoming customers over the weeks and months to come.”
