Rother annual meeting: Public-speaking and car park upgrades approved

Upgrades to car park machines and allowing public speaking at planning meetings were rubber-stamped by Rother on Monday night (May 16).

Rother District Council will spend £75,000 on new car park machines with more functions including card payments.

Petitioners will soon be able to make a speech at planning committee meetings and the authority’s response to a ward boundary review was approved.

Cllr Susan Prochak (Lib Dem) welcomed the public-speaking initiative saying it has always been in their manifesto but questioned why it would take a maximum of seven months to implement.

Cllr Paul Osborne replaced Jimmy Carroll as chairman after serving as his deputy for the past 12 months.

In his first speech as chairman, the Eastern Rother representative and keen cyclist said he might try to visit every parish in the district on his bike.

A minute’s silence was held to remember former councillor Frances Winterborn who died last month.

The new chairman led the tributes saying no meeting with her was boring. Mary Barnes, who was made deputy chairman, said she was ‘incredibly grateful’ to Frances for the guidance she gave her when she first joined the council.

Maurice Watson said: “You can’t ever replace a person like Frances.”

Changes to the cabinet were confirmed with Simon Elford stepping down as he is ‘unable to continue’, according to leader Carl Maynard.

Sally-Ann Hart will take Cllr Elford’s place and will be responsible for public realm, culture and tourism, and Ian Hollidge will add Bexhill town centre to his portfolio.
