Saddling up for a premier horse show

BEXHILL town centre and promenade will echo to the sound of horses' hooves on Bank Holiday Monday, May 30, when a popular part of its annual horse show - the driving class - takes to the streets.

THe gleaming carriages and spotlessly presented horses are just one highlight of the event, first held in 1903, which is centred on the Polegrove recreation ground in Brockley Road, and which this year has an extended schedule.

As well as ever-popular classes such as family pony, Mountain and Moorland, working hunters, coloured horses and a large selection of jumping classes for both registered and unaffiliated horses, there is also a new class for ridden ex-racehorses.

Another attraction is the crowd-pleasing parade horse class, now in its third year, in which foreign breeds get the chance to shine in the main ring in either traditional or English dress.

The new Accumulator Showjumping Class takes place in Ring One. It is a precision jumping competition and is sure to cause a stir as riders battle it out to get the highest number of points to win, possibly gambling on jumping the Joker fence and risking the loss of precious points.

A full show schedule can be downloaded from the event’s website, www.bexhillhorse show.co.uk and entries on the day are welcome, though at extra cost.

A dog show will also be held, with classes for both pedigree (registered and unregistered) and crossbreeds and the show commences at 1pm. Contact Pam Dyer on 01424 730594 for more information.

Other attractions include the Coakham Bloodhounds, a Shire horse parade, a wide range of trade stands, a funfair and a raffle in aid of the Horse Grass Sickness Fund.

Show spokeswoman Jennie Cunliffe said: “The committee would like to extend a very big thank you to all our very generous sponsors.”
