Search called off at Camber for missing swimmer

The nine-hour search to find the swimmer who went missing in the sea at Camber today (Sunday, July 24) has been called off by the coastguard.

Emergency services had been looking for the 19-year-old from London since around 12.40pm after two other swimmers had been rescued at Camber Sands.

The RNLI lifeboats stood down at around 4.20pm but now the Maritime and Coastguard Agency has called off the search.

“After an extensive search of the Camber Sands area and the surrounding sea, UK Coastguard has called off the search for a missing swimmer who was seen struggling in the water earlier today,” a coastguard spokesman said.

“Coastguard rescue teams from Dungeness and Rye, coastguard rescue helicopters from Lydd and Solent, Rye, Hastings and Littlestone RNLI lifeboats and Pett Level Rescue Boat (an independent inshore boat) beach lifeguards and Police all helped with the search.”

A 19-year-old and another London man in his 30s were rescued after getting into difficulty in the sea but .

Both suffered cardiac arrest but were resuscitated on the beach and airlifted separately to hospital.
