The service began in Hastings and expanded into Rother in 2000 supported by funding from the South East Development Agency (SEEDA).

Intergenerational mediation, within families between young people and parents/carers began in 2003 with funding from Children in Need, who continue to fund the service.

Family Mediation dealing with divorce and separation began in 2008.

Hastings MP Amber Rudd was among those attending the anniversary event on November 13.

She said: “It is a major achievement to have mediated nearly 2,000 neighbourhood cases, 700 intergenerational cases and over 1,600 family mediation cases, as well as training over 140 volunteer mediators.

“To have become the first community mediation service to be awarded the Legal Services Commission (LSC, now the Legal Aid Agency) Quality Mark in Community Mediation is an amazing accomplishment.”

Amber added: “I genuinely believe that such a mediation service which listens to and values both sides of those in conflict situations is incredibly valuable in helping neighbours, families and peer groups to resolve their differences.

“ Hastings is truly fortunate in having such commitment and dedication from all those working within Hastings and Rother Mediation Service, as formed and led so successfully by manager Nicola Hawkins.”

Mediation is a way of helping people to discuss problems and reach a solution acceptable to everyone involved through listening, supporting and guiding each party.
