Severe weather warning for Rother

RESIDENTS in Rother are being warned to be prepared for severe weather this weekend with high winds and heavy rain expected.

Amber warnings are in place across much of the district and wave heights are forecast to be higher than any previously recorded this winter.

“While the south east has escaped the severe flooding suffered by towns and villages in the west of the country, heavy rain and wind due this weekend is likely to cause widespread damage and disruption in the district,” said Tony Leonard, executive director at Rother District Council.

“We want to make sure residents are prepared for the severe weather this weekend and assure people that we will be working closely with the emergency services and other local authorities to ensure those affected receive the help they need as quickly as possible.”

Over the past few weeks, council staff have been working around the clock advising residents on sandbag filling, dealing with dangerous structures and warning residents of any risk of flooding.

On Thursday, following Environment Agency warnings of flooding in the Norman’s Bay/Sovereign Harbour area, Rother District Council officers joined colleagues from Wealden, Lewes and Eastbourne in setting up rest centres in case of evacuation. They also visited caravan sites and homes warning residents of likely flooding.

Mr Leonard added: “The bad weather looks set to continue and Rother District Council will continue to offer help and advice to its residents. We would urge people be aware of the risks and drive carefully on our roads as there is a danger of standing water and fallen trees.”
