South Cliff road subsides

A LARGE hole appeared in the road at South Cliff last Thursday afternoon. The road was closed between the Pages Avenue and Southcourt Avenue turnings while police and Highways Maintenance workers assessed the damage.

The hole revealed a hollow space farther along underneath the road surface.

Police were called at 1.47pm, with three more calls following shortly afterwards.

Police said onlookers had seen a heavily loaded lorry go past and heard a loud noise.

Highways maintenance workers from Colas were on the scene and were expected to take up the top of the hollow part of the road and fill up.

PC Bellhouse said: "It must be some sort of erosion. Whether its an underground spring or something we won't know until it has been properly examined."
