Sovereign Light Cafe reopens after crash

The Sovereign Light Cafe has reopened, just days after a car ploughed into the building.

Police closed West Parade after the vehicle hit the cafe at around 2pm on Sunday (December 7).

The cafe was packed with customers at the time, but miraculously, no-one inside the building was hurt.

The driver, a 46-year-old man from Bexhill, was treated at the Conquest Hospital in Hastings for a neck injury.

The collision caused some structural damage, but luckily after an assessment by Rother District Council officers, the building was deemed safe to reopen to customers on Wednesday (December 10).

The Sovereign Light Cafe achieved global fame a couple of years ago thanks to Battle band Keane, who wrote a song about the humble cafe.

As a result of the song’s popularity, Keane fans from across the globe have made the journey to Bexhill to visit the iconic refreshment stop.
