St Augustine's church summer fair

With a coconut shy, steam train rides, icecream and toffee apples, the summer fete at St Augustine's church was all about good old-fashioned fun.

The theme was Beside The Sea, reflected in the event which appealed to young and old alike, with stalls, games, and treats to eat and drink.

The Reverend Robert Coates commented: "We have great support and many church people get involved. It is a great community event both for people in the church and outside as well. It brings us all together as a family in the church and it is good for people to come in. "It has a lot of purpose apart from raising money."

Organiser Sandy Barrett commented: "We were supposed to open at 11am but people started coming in - I am pleased about that. We have got masses of stuff this year, and there is such a good atmosphere, I think. It is good to see everybody smiling, and we have got lots of things for the kids this year, with games and the coconut shy, the miniature steam train rides, the chocolate fountain, toffee apples and toys.

"This is also very handy for local people along the road - it brings all the groups together. I was worried about the weather, but you can't do anything about that. The kids love it. The refreshments are brilliant too - there are bacon rolls, and bacon and eggs - and Dorothy Ashwood is in charge of the food.

"The whole church comes out to help today."

In the garden were games and stalls set up by members of the junior church, assisted by Mary Brown and Sue Ridgley.

Mary said: "About 15 children in the junior church are involved- and the big ones and the little ones all help out. They have been looking forward to this - we have a coconut shy, chocolate tombola, Pick The Duck, a human fruit machine, and buzznuts."
