Staff car parking charges to be introduced

From 1st December staff at East Sussex Hospitals NHS Trust will be charged to park. Staff will be charged 50 pence per day or 30 pence for those working less than 5 hours a day. The daily rate is an incentive to encourage staff to leave their car at home and seek alternative ways to work.

David Philliskirk Director of Estates and Facilities said, "Staff car parking charges are in place in many NHS Trusts and have been for several years. Our staff recognise the importance of Healthy Transport and are keen to support it, although it is acknowledged that the introduction of parking charges is not popular.

Through the introduction of these charges the Trust will generate funding for investment to support the implementation of the Trust's Healthy Transport Plan, which includes initiatives such as secure cycle racks, changing facilities, a car sharing scheme and subsidised bus permits."

Implementation of staff car parking charges follows a three month staff consultation. The income raised will be equally divided to support Healthy Transport, financial recovery, and other development projects. It is estimated the introduction of charges will generate around 200,000 each year.

Staff will have the option to buy a daily ticket from the Pay and Display machines or a multi ticket scratch card valid for 30 parking credits, thus staff will only pay on the days they choose to park
