Standard bearer needed

A standard bearer is "urgently" needed by the womens' section of the Royal British Legion in Little Common.

The standard bearer represents the section at special occasions throughout the year - including ceremonies such as Remembrance Day, at the Cenotaph, or Armed Forces Day.

Ann Killick, womens' section committee member, said that the ideal person to take on the role would be fit and strong because of having to lift up the heavy standard and carry it slotted into the leather harness that straps onto the body for support.

Ann said: "The last standard bearer we have had did it for years but has had to retire...We have been looking for several months for a new standard bearer.

"Transport to events will be arranged and paid for and it is preferable if the person is already a member of either the RBL or the womens' section, but this can be arranged.

"There were a couple of younger women who were interested in doing it but they had family committments. It is difficult to find anybody, but this is a job that once you have you want to keep doing it - it is quite an honour and an amazing thing to do."
