Stronger voice for disabled

More than fifty people from across East Sussex got together to celebrate the launch of the Disabled People's Participation Group.

This new group believes that services for disabled people will only improve, if those that use them get involved in how they are developed.

Sarah Playforth, independent consultant and chairwoman of the first meeting, said: "The launch of the Disabled People's Participation Group was the first time in East Sussex I had seen so many disabled people from so many different backgrounds in one place together being really listened to. The event provided ESCC and the PCTs with hugely valuable comments and ideas for how the group can have a real influence on service providers."

Cllr Bill Bentley, Lead Member for the council's Adult Social Care department and the county's Diversity Champion said: "If you experience barriers or difficulties in your daily life as a result of an impairment, please join this group and help us make services truly accessible."

Mike Wood, Chief Executive of NHS Hastings and Rother and NHS Downs and Weald Primary Care Trusts, said: "I'm thrilled this new group is up and running. I look forward to working with its members to improve access to local services and to challenge public perceptions about disability."
