Supermarket set to bridge the gap

SAINSBURYS wants to extend its Bexhill store by more than half and include upper deck car parking with a bridge link over the railway line to the town centre.

Town leaders have welcomed the move.

It has been the planners' long-held dream to bridge the rail line at this point.

Since modern Bexhill's creation a century ago, the rail line has effectively divided the shopping centre in two.

Regeneration partnership town centre and tourism action group chairman Steve Ayres called it "a positive move."

Partnership chairman and Chamber of Commerce president Malcolm Mitcheson said: "This sounds very positive. It's a great move in the right direction."

The proposal is to modernise and extend the store from 1,468 sq. metres to 2,553.

The proposed extension would bring the east side of the store out to a point level with the access tunnel from Buckhurst Place.
