Transition programme for Battle Abbey youngsters

It's a big thing moving from primary to senior school.

Year 6 pupils at Battle Abbey Prep School have already been preparing for the transition to senior school and greater freedom and responsibility they will find there.

Their transition programme comprises a series of courses, such as I.M.P.S. '“ a health education initiative which operates out of the Eastbourne District General Hospital which aims to provide children with the skills to keep themselves safe, act promptly to save life or prevent disability and to help others appropriately.

Another is Cycling Proficiency, run by the Local Education Road Safety Officer and ending with a test and a certificate, Junior Lifeguard certificate, and Junior Sports Leadership '“ a course of training involving both theory and practice.

For the practical element Year 6 children play a big part in organising and running Infant Sports.

Judy Clark, headteacher, is "very enthusiastic" about the programme and commented: "The children have approached the courses with great enthusiasm and feel that they have really benefited from each one. Hopefully they will feel more confident and be better equipped to face the transition to senior school."
