UPDATE: Woman’s death confirmed after Amberley cottage blaze

Emergency services have confirmed a woman has died in a blaze in a thatched cottage in Amberley this afternoon (Friday).

Five fire engines were called to reports of a house fire in Hog Lane at around 4.30pm.

Inspector Steve Rayland said: “It has been confirmed that there has been a fatality found in the house, but next of kin have yet to be informed.

“The fire is now out but part of Hog Lane remains closed.

Police and fire investigators are at the scene and working to establish the circumstances of the fire.”

A spokesperson for West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service added: “Sadly a woman has died this afternoon in a house fire in Hog Lane, Amberley.

“West Sussex Fire and Rescue received the first call from an automatic alarm and other 999 calls from neighbours at 4.23pm.

“Five fire engines were sent to the scene and two are left at the scene dealing with hot spots and investigating the cause.”

A village resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said: “When I came back from work at 5.15pm there were a number of fire engines by the Black Horse pub.

“Somebody in Hog Lane reported smoke and that is when the fire brigade were called. There were at least four fire engines.”
