Two men in custody following weekend muggings

TWO MEN have been arrested following a number of late night muggings in Bexhill over the weekend which included one victim being attacked with a metal object.

All the robberies took place in the same general area and occurred within approximately thirty minutes of each other.

Police say in each incident the offenders were seen with a suspected firearm.

The first incident happened at around 11.40pm on Saturday September 25 when a man was approached by two men at the junction of Windsor Road and Victoria Road.

The muggers stole a mobile phone from the victim.

Ten minutes later, at 11.50pm, two men demanded money from a man walking in Reginald Road. The victim was hit with a metal object and managed to escape.

Shortly after midnight a third man was also approached by two men. The victim handed over a mobile phone and the offenders also stole a bag he was carrying.

Police have since arrested two local men on suspicion of committing the offences.

Jordan Hookway, 18, of Crowhurst Lane, Bexhill, was charged with two robberies, attempted robbery and possession of an imitation firearm.

Mr Hookway appeared in court September 29 and was remanded in custody.

A 23-year-old local man was also arrested on suspicion of robbery and remains in custody.

Chief Inspector Heather Keating said: "It is unusual in Rother for serious offences like this to occur. The suspected offenders in this case have been promptly identified and arrested and an imitation firearm recovered.

"These type of offences quite rightly carry substantial custodial sentences. If anyone has any information about crime or criminals in Rother I would urge you to contact us on 0845 60 70 999 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 as I am keen to prevent crimes before they happen if at all possible."

Anyone who witnessed any of the incidents, and has not yet spoken to officers, is asked to contact Sussex Police on 0845 60 70 999 quoting serial 1846 of 25/9 or the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Police would also like to hear from anyone who has CCTV in the area which may be able to assist officers in their enquiries.
