Two runners take on Kilimanjarochallenge to raise funds for charity
Two local runners are preparing to take on the highest mountain in Africa to raise money for good causes.
Terry Kitson and Tim Jury, of Hastings Runners, set off to climb Mount Kilimanjaro on October 6.
Terry is planning to use this great personal challenge to good use, and raise funds for a charity that is dear to his families heart, Epilepsy Lifestyle.
Jude his grandson suffers from this condition, and has been helped by this charity.
He said: “They are not a well known charity, but their work is vital in helping people manage this condition.
“They provide equipment, which helps carers and parents monitor the sleep patterns of suffers and is invaluable in the fight against SUDEP, sudden unexpected death.
“This can happen when seizure happens during sleep, and breathing can stop, resulting in death.
“These monitors check breathing levels, or signs of a seizure taking place, with an audible alarm. These are not normally provided by the NHS, they range in price from £125, for a video monitor to oximeter cost £800.
“Tim has a long standing connection with the charity Farm Africa, next year with 30 years of his charity and he will be planning something special, for that.
“I know times are hard, and there are so many worthy causes, but it would be great if you could make a donation .”
Terry and Tim are funding the trip themselves, so every pound goes to the charity.
Terry said: “We leave for Africa on October 6, to start our trek next day.
“Kilimanjaro stands at 5895 metres above sea level, although not a technical climb, its takes to between 6/7 days to reach the summit.
“Altitude can be a problem as you climb higher, so we are spending an extra day for acclimatisation, before we go for the peak, at midnight on the big day.
“We will see a wide range of temperatures during our climb from 20c at the start too -9c at the summit.
“I you would like to know more about the charity or make a donation, visit the Virgin Money Giving site and search Terry Kitson.”
Google Virgin Money Giving - Hastings Runners Kilimanjaro Challenge to be taken to the correct web page.
Terry will be updating the page with training updates.
