Sergio disappeared when two dog walkers got into difficulties attempting to rescue their beloved pets from the sea at Tide Mills.

The Newhaven Coastguard Rescue Team was sent to the scene, along with the Newhaven Lifeboat. One person had made their own way back to shore and the other was brought back with the aid of a coastguard rescue swimmer.

The two dog owners were checked by paramedics; they were very cold but did not require hospital treatment.

One of the dogs made its own way back to shore and a search commenced for Sergio.

Newhaven Lifeboat launched its inflatable Y boat which searched close inshore from the East Pier to Tide Mills, then the West Beach to the end of the breakwater and also in the entrance to the harbour.

At the same time the main lifeboat searched a wider area further out to sea from the East Pier to Seaford beach and also behind the West Arm. The search for the missing pet was eventually called off.

The public are being asked to keep an eye out for Sergio just in case he has come ashore outside the initial search area.
