Volunteers to be recognisedwith an invite to tea party

East Sussex entrepreneur Sheikh Abid Gulzar is planning a celebration afternoon tea during National Volunteers Week to say thank you to those locally who go far beyond the call of duty.

Volunteers Week takes place between June 1 and 12.

Over 21 million people volunteer in the UK at least once a year and this contributes an estimated £23.9bn to the UK economy.

These volunteers are a shining example of how we can all make a big difference to individuals and communities every day from improving the environment we live in, spending time with those who may otherwise be lonely and contributing to a range of other essential services and support.

And Mr Gulzar wants to treat 150 charity volunteers living in East Sussex to a free afternoon tea on Friday June 3 at 2.30pm.

Mr Gulzar said: “I take great pride in supporting many local charities throughout the year, and I watch and admire the wonderful work they do.

“I like to do my very best for local charities. I enjoy nothing more than welcoming disabled or underprivileged people to my hotels or on the pier, and giving them a treat which brings a smile to their faces. It brings a smile to my face too, which I love.

“Volunteers Week is a great event nationally, and I want to do my bit for local volunteers. We all know what a wonderful job they do locally.

“There are some real amazing charities across Hastings, Rother and East Sussex, and I think a free cup of tea and a slice of cake from me is something I would very much like to do.”

Mr Gulzar wants to hear from local volunteers, or local charities that will nominate people. Feel free to nominate yourself if you are a charity volunteer.

Mr Gulzar will then write personal invitations to the successful applications. He says he wants to hear from the real unsung heroes of the county.

‘When you are reading this, please think of people who are really worthy. There must be so many. I will give them a nice treat and it will be a great honour to host them for the afternoon.’

The event is being held at the Boship Lions Farm Hotel at Hailsham, one of the three hotels he owns.

The Volunteers Week campaign started back in 1984 and this year has had a n additional five days added so people have more time to celebrate the good work of volunteers.
