Warning on oil spills at Glyne Gap

WARNINGS of oil spills have prevented walkers from enjoying the beach at Glyne Gap.

Marylou Gibson contacted the Observer to say there are two notices either side of Galley Hill and asked why.

She said: “I walk on the beach regularly with my dog but have been staying away because I am worried about taking my dog where there may be oil spills.”

The notices have been there for a couple of weeks according to Bexhill Coastguard’s Gary Tidman.

He said Rother District Council had been notified, and samples of the oil had been sent to pollution control officers at the Environment Agency, but there was so little it did not warrant any particular attention.

Gary said: “What happens is certain ships clean their tanks out in mid-voyage which they are not supposed to do, and sometimes that gets washed up on shore.

“We have been monitoring it every three or four days to make sure it was not getting any worse but it is dissipating quite well.”
