Wealth of local talent

A WEALTH of local talent displayed some of their work at the annual Bexhill Artists' Workspace exhibition at St Barnabas' Church.

Last Friday's event was officially opened by Town Mayor Cllr Eric Armstrong and his wife and Mayoress, Jeanette.

The proceedings began with a welcome from chairman Terry Carter who said that the paintings on display catered for "varied tastes, modernistic or traditional - something for everyone".

The Mayor said: "I am amazed at how many different talents there are in Bexhill".

The Mayor claims not to be artistic although he should know a thing or two about artists as he does come from a family which includes a brother who is an artist. The Mayoress also admitted to be something of an artist herself having taken evening classes in water colours, drawings and ceramics.

Bexhill Artists Workspace (BAW) was founded in 1998 for artists living and working in Bexhill and currently boasts a membership of eighty. Sadly this could well be the last time the exhibition is held at the church as the future of the church is uncertain.

Secretary Margaret Carpenter said that they are now looking for another venue as the church will not be taking any more bookings after April 20. She said: " St Barnabas' has been a wonderful location to exhibit our work. Unfortunately this is the last time we can use this beautiful building as there are no parishioners available to run the church".

St Barnabas' Church was almost destroyed by an arsonists fire in December, 2005 and although nearly completely restored there is speculation that the building may now be demolished to build flats or stand empty.

BAW exhibit on the first Sunday of each month from May to September, 10am-4pm at the Colonnade just below the De La Warr Pavilion, Bexhill, admission is free.
