Burglars don't care whose name is written on the label '“ that's the message from Sussex Police as it launches its annual Operation Cracker campaign, in a bid to reduce the number of burglaries over the festive period.

In order to hammer home the message and raise public awareness, Operation Cracker leaflets are being distributed throughout Sussex. The advice on them includes:

Make sure your house looks occupied use time-switches for lighting and close the curtains.

Keep your home secure and store your gifts out of sight until Christmas comes.

Be a good neighbour, report anything suspicious.

Don't leave goods and presents visible inside your car.

Don't leave empty boxes outside your house '“ these simply advertise the fact that you have new valuables inside.

Sussex Police is introducing a fleet of specially equipped 'bait vehicles' to target car criminals who prey on motorists and catch them red handed.

The cars or vans are being placed in selected parking locations across Sussex. When the thief breaks in, they do not realise that the police have been alerted and that all their actions are being recorded on in-car video to be used in evidence against them.
