The Wingates Band was formed in 1873. In 1891, the band signed its first professional conductor, William Rimmer of Southport, one of the all-time 'giants' of the British brass band movement. By the turn of the century, William Rimmer had turned Wingates from a local band into one of Britain's foremost brass bands, culminating in 1906 with the band achieving national fame by winning the 'Double', namely the British Open and the British National Championships. The following year, Wingates astounded the brass band world by winning the Double yet again, and this remarkable 'Double Double' has only been achieved on one other occasion since, in the 1970s by the famous Black Dyke Mills Band.

The Wingates story has had many ups and downs including almost half the band's members and senior committee personnel were tragically lost in the Pretoria Pit Disaster - one of the worst accidents in British mining history, which claimed the lives of 344 men and boys.

One of the proudest moments for the band came in 1986, when Wingates became the first ever-traditional British brass band to play in St Paul's Cathedral, London, in the presence of Her Majesty Queen.
