Baird would be a good name

The Observer reported recently that Wetherspoons has been granted a license in respect of its new premises in Bexhill which , as I understand it, are due to be converted and operational within the near future.

The company told me, earlier in the year, that they always seek to consult locally when naming a new outlet.

I’d pointed out to them that John Logie Baird has a strong connection to Bexhill, as does Hastings which has a Wetherspoons of the same name!

I also made a suggestion [on the letters page] that Bexhill capitalises on the link with a new public house, calling it The Baird, or The Baird Court [where he died in June 1946].

Next year is the 70th anniversary of his death.

What a perfect opportunity for joined up thinking!

Baird’s son lives in Canada but his grandson works at the National Media Museum in Bradford.

He seems to be a very nice chap and might be persuaded to cut the ribbon perhaps?

Having made these suggestion I’ll leave the rest to Rother council, elected representatives, the Town Forum and Wetherspoons itself.
