As the other Labour candidate in Sidley at the Rother District Council elections last May I would like to completely disassociate myself with the recent action taken by Sidley Councillor Maurice Watson in defecting to the Conservatives.
As the only Labour councillor he has let down all those who voted for him in Sidley who now have nobody on the council who can represent them, their needs and their concerns.
Instead of challenging the Tory council policies that affect Labour voters most, he now joins the Tories and votes with them.
He says, “I cannot spend the next three years as a Labour person doing nothing.”
However, if he opposed Tory cuts and other adverse policies affecting the people of Sidley, he would be doing exactly what Labour voters elected him to do.
He would therefore not be ‘doing nothing’!
When Councillor Watson was made mayor just after the elections last May I warned readers in your letters page at that time that, by accepting the office of mayor, he might find himself compromised by having a conflict of political interests.
That compromise is now complete and comes directly after he concludes his duties as mayor.
Finally, I will leave him and your readers with this thought.
If, by joining the Tories, he thinks he can better represent those in Sidley who voted for him as a Labour candidate, he should put this to the test, resign immediately and stand in a by election as a Conservative candidate.
This would be the most honourable, just and democratic thing for him to do.
