Do the job you’re paid to do

There are several points that need to be made in regard to your front page article (October 23).

The first is that, despite the implied assumption made in the article, parking is not just a problem for traders and neither is it a problem confined to the town centre.

Parking is a problem throughout Bexhill.

The second point is that local authorities taking control is not the panacea that so many think it to be.

Because of the way the law is, certain parking offences will still fall under the remit of Sussex Police (no doubt to their horror).

Until central government changes primary legislation to remove these anomalies, councils taking over at this time is a recipe for confusion.

The third point to make is that, for all that they don’t want to be, Sussex Police are the responsible authority for parking in Bexhill.

Unless and until the local council take over, they should be doing the job that they are paid for, namely enforcing the parking regulations (as I have said in this paper before, having paid Sussex Police to do this I see no reason why RDC taxpayers should be asked to pay a second time to set up and run another parking enforcement agency).

Lastly, in regard to the photo on page 3, the vans shown are not “parked on the curb”.

They are parked on and obstructing the pavement (if anyone wonders why motorists think that parking like this is either legal or acceptable, the answer lies with Sussex Police. After all, If motorists see the police parking like this, why wouldn’t they assume that it’s okay and Sussex Police do have a tendency to park like this).
