Many are lacking in civic pride

In response to the letter in last weeks Observer (Why were so many people absent?).

Perhaps as an ex-councillor I can answer your question.

There was a time when councillors were chosen to be mayor and chairman because of their dedication ability, and service to the community.

Sadly things have changed, the Conservative group last May decided to replace the deputy mayor who had been democratically elected to be mayor at the actual mayor making (totally unprecedented) for political reasons, bringing the office of mayor into disrepute.

The very same Conservative group representing the whole of Rother elected the chairman.

It therefore comes as no surprise that these councillors who are obviously totally lacking in any kind of civic pride should fail to support the chairman they chose at his civic service.

Obviously some councillors had previous engagements (we were on holiday) but many councillors fail to attend any civic event.
