Canadian pop star Grimes has sparked debate once again after recent remarks about her pregnancy.

The concept of the ‘gender reveal’ has been a hot topic lately, especially after last year's stories of reveal parties gone horribly awry.

Fortunately, that won't be something Grimes has to worry about, if her recent comments are anything to go by.

Who is Grimes?

Claire Elise Boucher, or Grimes, is a Canadian musician known for blending various styles, including pop, R&B, electronic and hip-hop.

Her style is so eclectic that a list of her influences will often include Kate Bush, The Legend of Zelda, Bikini Kill, Michael Jackson and Nine Inch Nails.

Her fourth album, Art Angels, brought her to the attention of a wider audience and won several “album of the year” awards. She followed it up with Miss Anthropocene, which was released on 21 February 2020.

In more recent years, Boucher has also been in the spotlight as one half of an oddball power couple with Tesla CEO Elon Musk. Their relationship was not well received by some fans, with some accusing her of “selling out” by pairing up with the problematic billionaire.

In January 2020, Boucher announced that she was pregnant with her first child. Musk is assumed to be the father, although neither of the pair have confirmed this.

Why won't she reveal her baby's sex?

Boucher recently used a YouTube livestream to discuss her experiences of being pregnant with her fans.

The previous month, the singer admitted via Instagram that she was struggling with many aspects of it, especially with trying to keep working with the demands it placed on her both physically and emotionally.

She also suggested that pregnancy might not be “as visible or discussed as it should be”, making it hard for first-timers to really know what to expect.

During the livestream, one user then asked whether Boucher would be having a boy or a girl. In response, the pop star took the opportunity to explain that she would not be publicly discussing the matter as she did not want to unnecessarily gender her child.

“I don’t want to gender them in case that’s not how they feel in their life,” she explained. “I don’t know, I just feel like it doesn’t need to be known.”

Later on the same day, Boucher reiterated her stance when a Twitter user asked her the same question. Her reply stated simply that, “they may decide their fate and identity.”

Also being kept under wraps is the name she has chosen for her child, although for entirely different reasons. She admitted that, “I have a name for the baby, but I don’t want to say what it is because everyone

I’ve told it hates it, and everyone’s gonna make fun of it.”
