1066 Relay set to make the running

Some 55 teams are expected to tackle the five stage off-road relay organised by Hastings Runners.

“It’s a nice step up from the 39 teams which had last year so I’m pleased with that,” said race organiser Nick Brown.

The event has attracted teams (each consisting of five runners) from all over the South East, as well as the Minnesota Loons from the USA who look set to defend their long distance trophy.

Other clubs taking part include the current 1066 Shield holders Beckenham RC, while there are also a strong contingent of runners from Dulwich AC and Serpentine RC, the latter are the largest running club in the country with more than 2,000 members.

Beckenham’s hold on the Shield could come under threat from Hastings AC which looks like fielding a couple of teams. There will also be at least eight Hastings Runners teams.

The 33.05-mile race starts in the grounds of Pevensey Castle, and follows William the Conqueror’s historic 1066 Country Walk route passing by such iconic landmarks as Herstmonceux Castle and Battle Abbey, before going through some glorious countryside at Westfield, Doleham, the Brede Valley, Icklesham and Winchelsea on the way to the finish in Rye.

There will be plenty of events going on in Battle Abbey green and at the race finish in Gibbet Marsh car park, Rye, to keep spectators entertained whilst awaiting the runners’ arrival.

Stage start times: Stage 1 - Pevensey Castle to Herstmonceux Castle 9am, Stage 2 - Herstmonceux Castle to Battle Abbey 9.30am, Stage 3 - Battle to Kent Street 10.30am, Stage 4 - Kent Street to Icklesham 10.50am, Stage 5 Icklesham to Rye 11.50am.
