Bexhill bowlers roll into county finals

Bowlers from Bexhill clubs have achieved remarkable success in the county knockout competitions.

Sidley Martlets and Spartan will have representatives in several of the men’s finals and as a result they will also be heading to the national finals at Royal Leamington Spa.

Polegrove ladies are also going well in one of the women’s competitions.

Martlets are through to the county final and national finals in the fours after the team of Michael Stone, Carl Dyer, Nigel Hooper and Danny Dargan ran out convincing 25-4 winners against a Hove & Kingsway rink skipped by D. Ovett.

Their opponents in the county final at Popes Mead BC on Sunday August 7 will be the Chichester BC rink skipped by D. Leach.

Stone and Hooper will play each other in an all-Sidley two-wood singles final, also at Popes Mead on the same date. Hooper beat R. Maton (Worthing) 17-12 in one semi-final and Stone saw off S. Edwards (Rottingdean) 15-7 in the other.

What’s more, Stone beat K. Holman (Lindfield) 21-11 in the semi-finals of the singles at Lewes BC on Monday to set up a final against Dave Richardson (Popes Mead).

Stone, Dyer and Hooper narrowly missed out on reaching the county triples final after losing 19-9 to A. Harding (Lindfield) in the semi-finals.

Martlets made it to the quarter-finals in the double fours before being edged out 39-37 by Norfolk.

Spartan will be represented by Stuart Holland and Jason Walter in the county finals at Popes Mead.

In the semi-finals of the Champion of Champions singles, Holland completed a 21-10 victory against M. Patching (Henfield) and his reward is a final showdown against R. Taylor (Preston).

There was an all-Spartan semi-final in the under-25s singles and the more experienced Walter came through to defeat Lewis Sargent 21-8. Walter will battle it out with A. Jackson (Woodingdean) to be crowned county champion.

Polegrove ladies played really well to reach the zone final in the county double rink bowls competition.

The home team of Bjorg Simpson, Jackie Mayhew, Lorraine Hume and Ann Pole won 26-17, while Linda Cooper, Alice Phillimore, Jo Watt and Mary Williams pulled off an 18-17 away win.

Polegrove were due to play Peacehaven BC at Saffrons, Eastbourne, on Thursday with the winners advancing to the county final next month.
