Bexhill maintain revival

THE revival continued for Bexhill United with a competent 2-0 win over Hurstpierpoint in Sussex Division Three.

Successive home wins have lifted the Polegrove outfit up to mid-table and shunted the painful memories of their opening three defeats very much into the background.

"They were very important results," said manager Billy Trivett. "It was just what we needed again. We didn't concede a goal and that's the pleasing thing about it all. I'm certain that's going to be the key to the season because we've certainly got the players to score at the other end and we're very quick breaking.

"Adam Quinn came in and did a brilliant job for us and they're all understanding their jobs. We got caught in possession in the first two games and it cost us a goal both times but just recently we've stopped doing that. In two games we've had one shot to save.

"The performances were pretty much the same really. It looked like we just carried on from where we left off really. They were a very strong side. First of all we had to combat that and then get our football going which is what we did. We worked as hard as they did, won our 50-50s and we deserved our win."

United were just starting to get on top when Dave Carey, ironically one of the smallest players in a crowded penalty area, sprung up above the crowd to head home his fourth goal in three games in the 25th minute.

Bexhill maintained that sort of tempo for the remainder of the match and, although Lee Martin had to make a smart save from a shot which he saw late, they made sure of the three points with a top notch second goal 18 minutes from time.

Wes Tate bamboozled three defenders with a quicksilver turn on the half way line. He then powered forward and unselfishly squared for Carey whose shot was parried back to Tate, some of whose play has been "outstanding" according to Trivett, for him to slot home the rebound - his first Saturday goal in United colours. Centre-half Steve Mote was the McPherson & Partners man of the match.
