Bexhill run ended by Heath

BEXHILL United's run of consecutive Sussex Division Three victories came to a disappointing end on Monday with a 3-1 defeat at home to Haywards Heath Town.

They slipped back to second-from-bottom after being beaten for the ninth time in their 12 league matches at The Polegrove this season.

Manager Bill Trivett said: "It was a disappointing result, but we played well in large quantities of the game. Three-one was marginally flattering, but I think they deserved to edge it on their finishing."

Bexhill got off to the worst possible start when Olly Davis scrambled home Chris Cook's seventh minute free kick to put Heath in front.

United levelled on 38 minutes, Neil Quigley releasing Richard Piper down the right and his cross was turned in by John Winfield.

But Lee Skinner restored the lead for sixth-placed Heath five minutes later and Simon Bristow smashed home number three from 25 yards with a quarter-of-an-hour remaining.

Piper squandered a glorious chance to pull one back when his last minute penalty was saved by Darren Lambert.

Uckfield Town leapfrogged Bexhill on the back of their third straight victory - a 3-2 success at home to rock-bottom Bosham.

That result did at least ensure that United will avoid the basement, however, because Bosham trail them by 10 points and only have three games left.
