Boxing legends invited to Bexhill

BOXING legends of yesteryear could be heading to Bexhill for what would be an amazing get-together.

The likes of Alan Minter, Chris Eubank, Charlie Magri, John H Stacey, Ernie Shavers, Nosha Powell, Ronnie Davis, Ray Cattouse, Paul Huggins and Barry McGuigan have all been invited to the ATHA Showbar on Saturday May 8.

Organiser and Bexhill United FC chairman Dave Harris, who is expecting roughly 80 per cent of the invitees to attend, is billing the event as "the biggest get-together of boxing personalities seen in this county ever I would think".

The evening will take the form of a dinner show and the aforementioned who's who of boxing will select who they believe is the greatest fighter of all time. Tickets, which cost 20, are available from Harris on 212099 with the proceeds going to Sussex Former Boxers benevolent fund.

More imminently though, emerging middle-of-the-road to heavy group Abandoned will grace the same venue tonight (Friday) on a special tribute evening for late Sidley United footballers James Duffell and Liam Cox. Admission is 5 and the majority of the profits will go towards an extension of the existing stand at Gullivers that will be named in their memory. Doors open at 7pm with the band appearing approximately an hour later. Tickets can be purchased on the door.

Then next Friday (March 13) it will be the turn of famous pop group Slade to woo revellers, again at the ATHA Showbar with sport in Bexhill the main beneficiaries. They will be supported by 60s and 70s backing bands Ocean Deep and Centre Page. Tickets cost 25, although numbers are limited to 300, and can be obtained from Harris on 212099. Doors open at 7pm with the live music getting under way between 7.30 and 7.45.
