A great night of boxing was enjoyed by a packed Hollington Community Centre crowd on Saturday as West Hill ABC hosted its annual show.

West Hill had planned for 12 of its boxers to compete, but Jake Towse and Toby Salmon were left disappointed as their opponents (both from Rayleigh Gym) weighed in too heavy.

The evening didn’t start too well for West Hill as a brave young Elliott Hedger (37kg, 11yrs) was beaten in his debut bout by Patrize Mughalzai, of Hooks ABC, but George Filkins (42kg, 12yrs) was victorious in his first fight against Archie Bye, of Kemsing ABC.

Richard Harffey (42kg, 14yrs) prevailed on a majority points decision after boxing excellently in what was eventually voted best junior bout of the evening against Tommy Lee, of Chelmsford ABC. William Badrock (42kg, 13yrs) also boxed well and won on a unanimous decision against Martin Mongan, of Hooks ABC.

Onto the seniors and Kieron Pierce (92kg) at times looked like he was going to end his bout against Razier Wood (Colchester) early only to blow out in the third and let his opponent nick the win. Niall Gray (57kg) could be proud of his performance despite losing to William Smith (Ashford ABC) in his debut bout.

Ben White (67kg) narrowly lost out to Michael Chalkley, of Rayleigh ABC, in his 80th amateur bout, much to the disappointment of his supporters who thought he had done enough to win. Club captain Steve Garlick (86kg) produced one of his best displays in a green vest to net a technically good and hard-fought win over Luke Robinson (Hooks ABC).

West Hill would like to thank the overwhelming support, and thank all the boxers coaches and helpers for helping to make it such a successfu evening. See Friday’s Hastings Observer for more pictures.
