Breaking news: Davis edges through in India

The St Leonards cueman scraped past Anthony McGill 4-3 in round two of the Indian Open this morning (Thursday) despite seeing a 3-0 lead evaporate.

World number 18 Davis clinched a tight opening frame 63-52 with a top break of 35 and a 52 helped him take the second 77-33. Davis then claimed the third 84-43 helped by a closing 41 to move within a frame of victory.

But Scottish world number 30 McGill stayed alive by winning frame four 73-28 aided by a 49 and then cut his deficit to 3-2 by clinching the next 64-19. He squared the match by taking frame six 70-1 with all his points coming in a single visit.

Davis, who won the Six-Reds World Championship in 2012 and 2013, began the decider with a run of 47 en route to a 52-point lead and although McGill replied with a 37, Davis eventually won it 70-41.

The 42-year-old Davis, who saw off Anthony Hamilton 4-2 in round one yesterday, will face Jamie Cope or John Higgins in round three early tomorrow morning. The winner of that will advance to the quarter-finals later in the day.
