Common can see glimmer of light

LITTLE Common Ramblers remain without a win after three Parker Building Supplies East Sussex League Division Three matches but there are signs of an upturn in fortune.

On what again looked like a low scoring wicket Little Common lost the toss against Pett and were put into bat.

The innings started well with a steady opening partnership of 38 between Peter Winchester and J. R. Ramarni before Winchester was trapped leg before by R. Myes.

Wickets then started to fall due to some good bowling by Myes who ended up with figures of 7-38 with only Ally Burnett impressing with a solid knock of 38. A late rally by the tail-enders brought the total up to 151-9 by the end of the 50 overs.

The Pett innings started well with some good clean hitting from A. Goodsell (89) and the game looked all over. A gritty bowling performance, however, by Little Common and, in particular, Andy Meredith (3-28) gave them an unexpected chance of victory. But Pett just edged over the line, finishing with only one over and two wickets to spare.

Skipper Meredith said: "I knew the toss would be very important on what was obviously going to favour the side that batted second. However, we knew that 160-170 would be a good score on this wicket so we had something to bowl at. And maybe if a couple of crucial decisions had gone our way near the end we could have possibly even won it."

Little Common play Wadhurst on Saturday May 28 and Meredith said: "This game is very important and we need to get our first win of the season. A couple of key players are missing but this gives a chance for others to impress and force their way into the 1st XI."
