Cornish: We should have won league

Paddy Cornish believes South Saxons should have won the South Hockey League Sussex Area - Division One title.

Saxons were forced to settle for their third successive runners-up finish after leaders Horsham II secured top spot with a 5-2 win at home to Hailsham last weekend - their 13th victory on the spin.

The Hastings club led the table going into the festive break with an unbeaten record, but two defeats in their first four games of 2012 - away to Penguin and at home to Hailsham - cost them dear.

Saxons captain Cornish said: “I think looking back at results now, we definitely should’ve won it. It might have come down to having to win on Saturday, but we definitely still should’ve had a chance at it.

“We’ve only got ourselves to blame really. Neither of the two losses we had after Christmas were games we should’ve lost. But we can’t dwell on that, we’ve got to concentrate on what we need to do in the next couple of games.”

Saxons do at least have the opportunity to complete the double over Horsham tomorrow (Saturday) if they can repeat their 1-0 victory at Horntye Park Sports Complex in October’s reverse fixture.

George Eldridge will return after missing last weekend’s 7-2 success at home to Middleton & Bognor through illness as Saxons seek to maintain their good form going into an important April, but Pete Watters is unavailable.
