Bexhill rueing missed chance

Bexhill are still smarting from a missed opportunity in their Sussex Premier League survival battle.

The Polegrove-based cricket team suffered a 30-run defeat at home to second-placed Roffey last weekend after subsiding from 126-3 to 173 all out.

First team manager Hamish Russell said: “In weeks gone by we’ve been unlucky, but our batting on Saturday wasn’t good enough.

“Andrew Harriott and Callum Guest batted really well, but everyone else in the team can have a real look at themselves and ask themselves why they got out in the manner they did.”

“If you can’t chase down 200 in the Premier League, you’re going to go down. The batters were a big let down on the weekend and I don’t think they would say any different.

“Against the Sussex Development XI we were a bit unlucky, against Eastbourne we should’ve won that game, but on this day we shot ourselves in the foot.

“That was a game we really should’ve walked away from with 26 points rather than eight and saying how annoying it was and how disappointed we are. We had players who I thought were far too soft on the day.”

Bexhill have into the two relegation places with a third of the programme now completed and will have to pick themselves up for the trip to Horsham tomorrow (Saturday).

“We’re only seven games into our season,” Russell added. “We’ve got to get our way out of it and I know we can do it. The players there are very, very capable batsmen and they’re all capable of making runs.”

What’s more, Bexhill will make the trip without in-form all-rounder Callum Guest, whose education commitments are also set to keep him out of next weekend’s game at Chichester Priory Park. See today’s Bexhill Observer for the full article.
