Cammish return gives Hastings '˜big boost'

The wicketkeeper/batsman scored 60 in last weekend’s win away to Brighton & Hove - his first Priory appearance since September 2004.

Gillespie said: “He’s a real quality player and he does give an extra dimension to our batting. When he went out there he looked very purposeful and very determined to do well.

“We’re hoping he’s going to be around for the rest of the season and if that’s the case that’s going to be a big boost for us.”

Cammish reluctantly left Priory after their relegation from the Sussex Premier League two years ago and helped East Grinstead to a runners-up finish last summer.

The 19-year-old played some second team cricket for Leicestershire as one of their academy players earlier this summer, but has now returned south and has featured for Sussex seconds this week and last.

With Priory now back in the top flight having clinched promotion in 2015, Cammish has returned to the club with whom he spent the 2013 and 2014 campaigns.

Cammish’s half-century helped Priory chalk up their third win in four games and second in succession on their travels as they comfortably saw off Brighton by six wickets.

Gillespie said: “I thought we bowled really well throughout the team and to get them out for 150 was a really good effort.

“Jed (O’Brien) was fantastic and credit must go to John Morgan because he had a really long spell uphill, which was really hard work in the heat, and bowled really well.

“Josh (Hahnel) and Leo both batted really well. They read the conditions perfectly, were really purposeful and positive, and enabled us to win at a canter.”

Priory are up into the top five ahead of the visit from a Cuckfield side featuring in-form Big Bash League star Jordan Silk tomorrow (Saturday). Play will get under way from 12.30pm at Horntye Park.

Silk is the leading runscorer in the entire league with 694 runs at an average of nearly 70 and is in a rich vein of form having hit three hundreds in his last four innings.

“It will be interesting to see how we go against Cuckfield because obviously they’ve got Jordan Silk, who’s a real top quality player so it will be a good experience for us to bowl at someone of that stature,” added Gillespie.

“We need to support the bowlers probably a little bit better in the field, but if we can do that and bat purposefully, it should be a good game of cricket.”
