Champs hoping to move on up

A win over local rivals Iden sealed the title last weekend and now the club plans on moving to Sussex Division Three (East) if the correct criteria can be met.

The likely switch in leagues means the club will be keen to recruit new sponsorship, with its young side possibly needing transport to get to most away matches.

“We have a very young side - half don’t even shave yet,” joked Rye honorary secretary and senior player Martin Blincow. “Switching leagues will mean more travel, but it’s a step up in standard for us.

“Any financial help would be greatly appreciated. It would be of real support to the young cricketers of Rye, and with over 70 colts in our ranks, it would be good exposure for someone.

“If we can move, we will do, and that is the hope. If we don’t it’s not the end of the world but it would be a shame. However, at Rye, the big emphasis is on playing and enjoying your cricket, whilst also socialising with your friends and simply having fun.”

As East Sussex Division One champions, Rye will compete in a tri-series with the winners of the West and Mid Sussex leagues at the BrightonandHoveJobs.com County Ground on Monday September 16.

Rye will line up against Crawley Down (Mid Sussex champions) and Portslade (West Sussex) in a day of T20 matches starting at 12.20pm. “It’ll be an exciting test,” Blincow added. “And it will be a great way to end the season.”

Rye have one more league match to play and that is at home to Heathfield Park tomorrow (Saturday, 12.30pm start).
