Durham in trouble at tea

On-loan Tim Linley had Division One leaders Durham in trouble after taking five wickets for Sussex on the first day of the LV Championship match at Arundel.

Linley, who played for Sussex in 2006 before joining Surrey three years later, has joined his former county on a month’s loan and clearly relished a return to first-team duty, claiming his first five-for since 2012.

Linley had figures of five for 41 from 15 overs at tea with Durham 246 for eight, their innings held together by a steadfast, unbeaten 60 from Gordon Muchall.

Linley took three wickets in 15 balls before lunch and then returned in the afternoon to pick up Ryan Pringle (five) and Paul Coughlin (nought) in the space of three balls.

They were two of the four wickets to fall during the session. Steve Magoffin ended a stand of 83 in 24 overs by Muchall and Michael Richardson when he had Richardson (46) caught at mid-wicket, while the dangerous John Hastings was taken at point off off-spinner Luke Wells for 23.

Muchall at least guided the leaders to their first batting bonus point for five games.
