Ervine then made 42 from 32 balls to help his country clinch a four-wicket win against United Arab Emirates in Nelson today (Thursday).

He featured in an important sixth wicket partnership of 83 with Sean Williams (76 not out) as Zimbabwe recovered from 167-5 to reach their target of 286 with 12 balls to spare.

The tournament is Ervine’s second World Cup having also played in the 2011 version when he scored 52 against Pakistan and 85 from 81 balls in the victory over Canada.

Ervine, whose older brother Sean has played for Zimbabwe and Hampshire, was Bexhill’s overseas player in 2007. He was Bexhill’s second highest 1st XI runscorer during his summer at The Polegrove with 433 runs from 16 Sussex League innings at an average of 30.93.
