Ex-Bexhill ace bowls England to win

Former Bexhill cricketer Monty Panesar played a starring role as England won the second Test in India this morning (Monday).

The Sussex spinner took 11 wickets in the match as England triumphed by 10 wickets in Mumbai to level the series at 1-1 with two matches remaining.

Added to the side after being overlooked for the first Test, Panesar seized his chance by claiming 5-129 off 47 overs, including the great Sachin Tendulkar for just eight, in India’s first innings 327.

After England replied with 413 thanks to centuries from Alastair Cook and Kevin Pietersen, Panesar again dismissed Tendulkar for eight en route to figures of 6-81 from 22 overs as India were all out for 142 in their second knock.

England knocked off the 57 runs required for victory without losing a wicket. Panesar, 30, has now taken 153 wickets in 43 Tests at an average of 32.31 with 12 five-wicket hauls and two 10-wicket matches.

Panesar played five Sussex Premier League matches for Bexhill in 2010, claiming 18 wickets at 17.83 with a best of 7-108. He also scored a half-century with the bat.
