Haff undecided over future

The Gullivers-based club ended the season 32 points adrift at the foot of Sussex Cricket League Division Two and will be relegated to Division Three (East) for next summer.

Haffenden said: “If I’m at the club next year I will probably captain it, but I’ve got a bit of thinking to do. I’ve got a couple of options, but to be honest I’m looking forward to not doing a lot on a Saturday for a few weeks.”

After four seasons at Bexhill, three of them as captain, Haffenden returned to Sidley in time for the 2011 season and helped the club win the Division Three (East) title, scooping the division’s batting award in the process.

“I still want to play half decent cricket,” Haffenden continued. “I’m not saying Division Three is bad - there’s some good cricketers in it - but I don’t know if me and Sidley are going in the same direction with cricket.”

Haffenden expects the majority of the team to remain on board with the exception of overseas player Sam Steele, who headed back to Australia today (Wednesday), and key all-rounder Paul Swannell.

“I should imagine a lot of players will stay put,” continued Haffenden. “Swanny hasn’t definitely said ‘no’ to coming back, but I would be very surprised if he did. He’s been a good player for us the last two years, but he’s travelling 160 miles to play cricket.”
